You are eligible for a NESB card which allows you extra time in examinations if you:
- were born outside of Australia; AND
- speak a language other than English at home; AND
- came to Australia less than 10 years ago.
Students born in English speaking countries such as New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom and USA may not be eligible.
You will automatically be sent an electronic Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) card by email shortly after Semester 1 and Semester 2 census dates if you meet all three criteria listed above. You may be asked to provide this to your Topic Coordinator for each examination to be eligible for extra time. Without a valid NESB card, you will not be granted the appropriate accommodations. You can also use a non-technical, English-only dictionary except where the Topic Coordinator determines that the nature of the examination in a particular topic may make the use of a dictionary inappropriate. Use of bilingual, electronic, specialised, technical, scientific and notated dictionaries as well as thesauruses, are NOT permitted, unless specified by the Topic Coordinator.
If you’re eligible to receive a NESB card, make sure your country of birth, the language you speak at home and the date you entered Australia is listed in the Student System (under the ‘My Details’ tab). You access the Student System through Okta. You'll also need to ensure your current address is up-to-date so it can be posted to you. If you’re unsure how to do this, Flinders Connect can help.
If you don't receive your NESB card shortly after census dates, and your details in the Student System are correct, please submit an Ask Flinders request. If the details you have registered in the Student System are correct, a card will be generated and emailed to you.
